Our technology becomes more advanced as the years go by. It seems like every day there is something new being developed. Just look at where we were only 15 – 20 years ago. Anyone else remember the lovely sound of dial-up?
When my family first got internet if we were connected, we couldn’t use the phone…which my brother and I found useful when we were home alone; we would connect the internet so our mom couldn’t call us to give us more chores to do.
And now, we have access to literally anything in our pockets. If we need to look up a word or see who sang a particular song. There’s an app for that.
The world is continuously changing, which is a good thing most of the time, as it shows that we are going forward and not stopping or going backward.
Instead of calling my friends who live in different states to see how things are going, all I have to do is follow or connect with them on social media, and I’m updated on their lives as they post.
It’s hard to imagine that not so long ago, social channels like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or Snapchat didn’t exist. It’s sporadic to find someone who isn’t on at least one social channel.
Why is that? What’s the reason for the increasing social media popularity? There must be a good reason since so many people use them…right?
Well, there are plenty of reasons. And you’re about to figure them out.
Social Media Allows Us To Meet New People
Social Media has made the world a much smaller place by connecting people from all over the world. I’ve connected with some great people through social media. Most of them have been in my industry, and I have been able to collaborate with them on new ideas or be inspired by the content they are posting.
Facebook Groups has been one of the best ways that I have connected with other people. I went from hating Facebook and only being on it to run a business page, to being interactive in some of the groups that I joined.
Social Channels are User-Friendly
Another reason why social media is so popular; most of the social platforms are easy to use and have a mobile app. This is great since most people are always on the go and don’t have time to open their laptops to check social profiles. For example, look at TikTok, an app where you post short videos (up to 60 seconds). It doesn’t even require you to have an account; all you have to do is download and open the app, and you’re good to go.
Social Media is Great for Finding a Job and Networking
Professional social networking sites, like LinkedIn, are great for networking and finding a new job.
Users can post their skills, publications, articles, etc., to catch the future employer’s attention. Hiring employees through professional social media sites, such as LinkedIn, has become quite a popular tactic in many companies. Or companies at least look to see if you have an updated LinkedIn profile and check to see how active you are on LinkedIn.
Social Media Can Help Businesses Reach Out to Potential Clients
One significant reason why social media has become so popular today is it allows businesses to reach larger audiences.
Social media channels have access to information like users’ hobbies, interests, and places they visit, which allows a company to target based on those attributes so they can reach their desired audience.
Have you noticed the ads that you see while scrolling through your favorite social channel? They aren’t random. They are either from the sites you have visited not so long ago, or you fit a particular target category. Also, we cannot forget about sponsored posts on Instagram – influencer marketing has become quite a big deal.
According to studies, people are most likely to buy a product if an influencer recommended it than if they saw an ad promoting it. So why wouldn’t a company prefer to pay a specific amount of money to a social media influencer than spend it on another marketing campaign?
Social media has been a game-changer. From meeting new people from all over the world or getting in touch with experts in your professional field, it has never been easier to connect with someone. Thanks to the availability and mobile apps, people who live a busy life, can keep in touch with their friends and family without worrying about checking their computer.
Social media channels are thriving. How long will it stay like this? Only time can answer that question, but it doesn’t look like social media will go away. One thing we do know for sure is it’s only getting more targeted and personal.
