Navigating Google My Business: A Must for Local SEO Success

Do you have a Google My Business (GMB) profile setup? It’s a crucial element to appearing in local search results. Even if you serve clients nationwide, I recommend having a Google My Business profile. Wouldn’t it be nice to attract some businesses in your community? In this article, I’ll explain how to set up a new GMB profile, how GMB and SEO work together, and ways to use and grow your account.

What is Google My Business?

Google My Business is a free business profile that appears on Google when local searches are made. People can find your business on maps and it appears in a box on the right in search results. Here’s an example of what it looks like:

A Must for Local SEO Success

Creating a GMB profile is how you claim ownership of your Google business account. It allows you to manage your online presence on Google.

Setting Up Your Profile

Here are the steps to set up a new Google My Business profile!

  1. Visit the Google My Business home page and log in to your Google account.
  2. Create a new GMB profile.
  3. Type the name of your business.
  4. Select your business category.
  5. Select if you have a physical location (if yes, add your business location and hours)
  6. Enter your phone number.
  7. Enter your website URL.

You will then be asked to verify your business profile through phone, text, or email. After you verify your new account, it could take a few weeks for it to appear on Google.

Ways to Use Your Google My Business Profile

Now that you have a GMB profile, let’s talk about some ways you can use it to your advantage. First, it allows you to provide accurate business information. It displays your website, contact information, location, and hours. Your website probably also has this information, but it gives people a quick overview before clicking on your website.

A Google My Business account allows you to collect reviews for your business. Ask clients to leave a review on Google when your project is completed or after six months of working together. Positive reviews from customers lead to increased trust from prospective customers, and it can influence their purchase decision. If they see you have 50 five-star reviews and your competitor has none, they’re probably going to pick you.

Did you know you can post updates on your GMB profile? It works similarly to a social media profile, but I recommend making updates more sparingly. These should be updates about your business, not sharing value like you would on other social media channels. Here are some examples:

  • Changing packages
  • Updating branding
  • Promotions
  • Events

The Products and Services sections of your GMB profile allow you to highlight your products or services. It gives people a snapshot of what you offer before landing on your page. You can help people find what they’re looking for before they end up on your site. Remember, we want quality traffic and to keep people away who aren’t actually interested in your services. Otherwise, they’ll just bounce off your website which can hurt your SEO.

How Google My Business and SEO Work Together

Google My Business and SEO work together to improve your online visibility and attract more customers. By optimizing your profile with relevant keywords, you can improve your business’s visibility in local search results. When users search for products or services in their area, Google may display GMB listings that are relevant to their search (AKA, your profile!)

Remember those reviews we talked about? Reviews are a key ranking factor for local SEO. Google considers the quantity, quality, and recency of reviews when determining the ranking of GMB profiles in local search results. Businesses with a high volume of positive reviews are more likely to rank higher in local search results, making it easier for potential customers to find them.

Google My Business also integrates with Google Maps. Users can discover and navigate to local businesses directly from search results. While this is more relevant for physical businesses, it can benefit online businesses, too.

The goal of SEO is to increase the visibility of your website. There are many ways to do that, but for local businesses, a Google My Business profile is key. Once you have your profile set up, complete it as best you can. The more information you provide, the more Google understands your business and can send the right people your way.
